5 Essential Aromatherapy Oils for Beginners
AUTHOR: Jemima Yin
With nearly 100 essential oils available, getting started with aromatherapy can naturally seem overwhelming at first glance. Not only is there a tremendous variety to choose from, but quality oils can be quite pricey! While some suppliers may offer small samples of oils at a lower price, experiencing the effects of individual oils often takes time. For an introduction to aromatherapy, sample packs of between four and six basic essential oils in ½ - 5 ml quantities may offer the best initial purchasing choice.
While individuals’ preferences vary, sample packs often contain a selection of the most versatile and therapeutic aromatherapy oil choices practitioners regularly rely on. Several of them blend well together and may be used either individually or in combination with each other. These may include:
- Lavender
- Rosemary
- Ylang Ylang
- Orange
- Geranium
Each aromatherapy oil has its own distinct properties and is used therapeutically in a variety of ways:
- Lavender is known for its calming, balancing, and clarifying effects on the nervous system. It is often used to alleviate stress and depression as well as insomnia and headaches. Lavender may also help with pain alleviation and its antiseptic properties help treat skin conditions. It has a light, pleasing aroma that is extremely popular. Lavender blends well with orange and geranium.
- Rosemary has a clarifying, stimulating effect on the brain and nervous system and is excellent at countering mental exhaustion or fatigue. It may also help improve memory and can help in alleviating headaches and respiratory ailments. Its antiseptic properties make it suitable for treatment of intestinal disorders, and it may also help manage or eliminate pain. Rosemary is also used to help alleviate skin conditions and in particular, has an invigorating effect on the hair and scalp. Rosemary should not be used during pregnancy or by individuals with certain medical conditions. Seek medical advice before using Rosemary if you are being treated for epilepsy or circulatory system disorders. Rosemary blends well with lavender and geranium.
- Ylang Ylang has a potent, exotic aroma that is highly sensual. It has a calming, balancing effect on the nervous system and tends to induce euphoric sensations. Ylang ylang is used as an antidepressant, a sedative, and an aphrodisiac. It may also help lower heartbeat and high blood pressure. Ylang ylang has a balancing effect on the skin and can help alleviate both oily and dry conditions. Ylang ylang blends well with lavender aromatherapy oil.
- Orange (Sweet Orange) has a cheery, invigorating, citrus scent most individuals recognize and enjoy. It is an excellent oil for brightening mood and reducing stress. Its warm, uplifting effects on the mind make it a popular choice for promoting relaxation. It may also help support the immune system and assist in the removal of toxins from the body. It is often used to treat cold and flu symptoms and promotes digestive system function and health.
- Geranium is primarily utilized for its uplifting, balancing effects. It has a strong, fresh scent that promotes mental and emotional stability. It is used to counteract stress and anxiety and help with relaxation. Geranium may also help correct hormonal imbalances and alleviate PMS symptoms. It may be used to treat skin conditions such as acne and dermatitis, and can also function as a mosquito repellant. Geranium blends well with lavender, rosemary, and orange.
As with all essential oils, it is important to seek out proper directions for safe usage of each aromatherapy oil. A quality aromatherapy guide book or information obtained from a reputable supplier can help ensure you make the most of the benefits each aromatherapy oil has to offer.
