Healing Throughout History: The Most Popular of all Aromatherapy Herbs

AUTHOR: Jill Fogel

Aromatherapy Herbs
Whether used in herbal medicinal practices or as part of aromatherapy, herbs have offered alternative solutions to a variety of mental and physical ailments for centuries. Lavender is perhaps the most popular and widely used of all aromatherapy herbs. The documented history of its usage offers insight into its many properties, and its mythical associations are intriguing as well as enlightening.

Lavender’s Ancient and Modern History

Many of the most advanced civilizations of ancient history made use of lavender in some form. Ancient Egyptians used lavender in the process of mummification. In Roman times, lavender oil was used in baths as well as for body scenting, as an insect repellant, and in cooking. Lavender is referred to in both the old and new testaments of the Bible, and was grown and used medicinally and to scent laundry and bedding throughout Medieval and Renaissance times. It was believed Lavender could help ward off the plague as well as cholera, and it was frequently used by individuals regularly exposed to deadly disease.

The Therapeutic Properties of Lavender

The most well know properties of lavender are its soothing, relaxing effects on the mind and body. Lavender is perhaps the most effective of all aromatherapy herbs for treating insomnia, depression, chronic stress and hyperactivity.

In addition to its therapeutic effects on the mind and emotions, Lavender is endowed with a host of other healing properties, as well. It is regarded as a standard first aid kit component with an amazing array of uses. Lavender is used as an analgesic, anti-coagulant, and diuretic. Antibiotic, antiviral and decongestant properties also characterize this versatile herb. Insecticidal properties allow it to serve as a bug repellent. Lavender curtails motion sickness. It alleviates swelling, helps treat burns, and can help clean and moisturize skin. These are but a few of the many medicinal purposes Lavender has served throughout ancient and modern times.

Aromatherapeutic Use of Lavender

As an essential oil extract, use lavender for its calming, relaxing effects. It can alleviate crankiness and reduce emotional tension in the home or work environment. For elderly individuals, it may help soothe and reduce dementia. Children and babies may be calmed or quieted by the diffusion of lavender in their rooms. Sleep may be induced and headaches may be alleviated for individuals of all ages.

If you wish to use lavender topically or in undiluted form, consult with a professional aromatherapist for proper usage directions and guidance. Although lavender is considered one of the safest aromatherapy herbs, care must be taken when using its concentrated essential oil. In particular, avoid using lavender during the first few months of pregnancy, or in the case of any allergic reaction.
