Homemade Perfume Recipes Using Essential Oils

AUTHOR: Anne Foster

Homemade Perfume Recipes Using Essential Oils
Homemade perfume recipes using essential oils can end up costing you a pretty penny if you've never done it before and don't know what you're doing. Essential oils, which are taken from plants and flowers, are much more expensive.

Since they cost less, fragrance oils are great for parfum neophytes and won't do much damage to your pocketbook if you have to throw away a failed recipe or two.

There are many essential oil menus online and they can apply to fragrance oil as well. Even if fragrance oil is synthetic, diluted using an oil carrier, or even a mixture of scents, homemade perfume recipes using essential oils can still apply.

In fact, some fragrances only come in fragrance oil form; so inexpensive synthetics can give you more options.

Whether you use essentials or synthetics, you will likely have to experiment anyway. The description woody or floral for example, even if specific flower and plant fragrances are specified, will hardly assure you that you will like the result of the recipe.

What's more, just as taste differs, so does a predisposition to allergy and sneezing! Some oil combinations, usually essential oil, although fragrant and safe by themselves, may irritate your nose or cause skin allergies - and reactions can't be predicted all the time.

But if you're looking for good perfume quality and aromatherapy benefits, AND you've graduated from menu experimentation then essential oils are for you. Here are a couple of examples of homemade perfume recipes using essential oils.

Homemade Perfume Recipes Using Essential Oils, Food, and Beverages

Floral Cologne

Make your own basic floral scent by taking a cup each of blossoms (whatever smells good to you or lavender, orange, lilac, etc.) and mineral water.
  • Use a clean piece of cheesecloth to cover the entire inner surface of a bowl, with a bit of cloth extra so the cloth doesn't slide in (fasten it with tape or clothespins to make sure).
  • Put the blossoms in the bowl, and cover them with water.
  • Leave overnight.
  • The next morning, remove the cheesecloth and squeeze all the contents into a container (any airtight jar, bottle, or pot will do).
  • Store in a cool place and use up within 30 days.

Rosemary-Cypress Perfume

This is an invigorating combination of vodka, rosemary, and cypress.
  • Take some vodka (around 2 or 3 tbsp.), and ten drops each of rosemary and cypress. Mix.
  • Add a couple of cups distilled water.
  • Add 4 or 5 drops hypericum perforatum.
  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Let it stand for half a day or a couple of hours more in a dark, cool place.
  • Shake it well before using.

You can try your own variations once you get the hang of it. Aside from making distinct perfumes all your own, home made fragrances make inexpensive yet unique gifts for any occasion.
