The Science Behind Selecting an Aromatherapy Scent

AUTHOR: Lindsay Green

Aromatherapy Scent
Aromatherapy involves utilizing the essential oils derived from plant flowers, roots, stems, leaves and bark for their natural, therapeutic effects. There are over 90 essential oils distilled from plant extracts, each with its own unique aroma and healing properties. The practice of aromatherapy begins with learning to identify and take advantage of any given aromatherapy scent.

The aromatherapy scent released from essential oils during dispersal into the air is what facilitates the therapeutic effects characteristic of each oil. Our sense of smell identifies and transmits airborn oil aroma molecules to the brain. Depending on the properties of the essential oil at the heart of the aromatherapy scent and to some extent the individual inhaling them, a variety of physiological effects may occur.

The Experience of Distinguishing Scents

It takes time and experience to learn to recognize, identify and utilize an aromatherapy scent. Some individuals are highly sensitive to certain essential oils’ aromas. For others, an aromatherapy scent may be more subtle or barely noticeable at all.

You may find an aromatherapy scent or blend absolutely irresistible, while someone else in the room may find it utterly intolerable! At various times, the same essential oil may be loved or despised by an individual. The effects of an aromatherapy scent are dependent on many factors.

Despite the highly individualized nature of aromatherapy, general principles can be applied regarding the properties of essential oils. Centuries and in some cases thousands of years of practical use and experience along with modern-day scientific research back the practice of aromatherapy. The known properties of essential oils make it possible for us to choose a particular aromatherapy scent to achieve our personal goals based on others’ expertise until our own experience grows. .

Selecting an Aromatherapy Scent

To select an aromatherapy scent, identify the purpose behind your decision. If you are simply looking for a nice scent to freshen your home or office environment, essential oils may not be ideal. You may prefer to select a perfumed or aromatic oil that will cost less and function purely as a scenting product. Although essential oils are highly aromatic, their use is best reserved for therapeutic application.

If a certain physical, mental, or spiritual effect is prompting your selection, it is a fairly simple matter to select an appropriate essential oil. Refer to a guide to aromatherapy essential oils or talk to an experienced aromatherapist or vendor. A variety of essential oils may offer the benefits you are seeking. It is then a simple matter to choose one that appeals to your own sense of smell. Purchase a small quantity of the essential oil and test it out on several occasions.

Once you become familiar with the effects of a particular aromatherapy scent, consider exploring a different essential oil to acquire new experience and knowledge. As you explore essential oils one scent at a time, you will gradually become familiar with a variety that serves many different therapeutic purposes.
