Learn the Power of Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy
Many individuals have heard of aromatherapy, but consider it a sort of “new age” trend similar to burning scented candles or incense. In fact, aromatherapy has little to do with masking odors or merely freshening a room. It is a holistic treatment remedy used for relief of a variety of medical conditions via application or inhalation of aromatic essential oils.

How Does Aromatherapy Work?

Aromatherapy is based on the known properties of various aromatic extracts from natural sources. Oils derived from fruits, grasses, flowers, trees and even seeds are known to have specific affects on the human body. The entire body including the nervous system, brain, limbic system and circulatory system is affected when essential oils stimulate the olfactory nerves, penetrate the skin, or enter the bloodstream via the lungs.

Some oils are known to promote relaxation and relieve anxiety or tension. Others have anti-viral or analgesic properties. The tremendous variety of essential oils makes aromatherapy a versatile therapeutic option for a wide range of symptoms and conditions.

What Methods are Utilized in Aromatherapy?

There are a variety of methods by which aromatherapy may be practiced. The choice depends on your particular condition, personal preference, and of course practicality. Experimenting with a variety of applications is perhaps the best way to decide which one suits your needs at any given time.

  • Baths: Simple method of application at the start or finish of the day.

  • Massage: Essential oils are readily absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin. Massage itself has added benefits for relaxation and stress relieve.

  • Compresses: Highly effective cold or hot to relieve pain and swelling following injury, overexertion or for treatment of arthritis.

  • Inhalation: Excellent for respiratory aid.

  • Vaporization: Helps control airborne germs and creates a soothing atmosphere.

Getting Started with Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a very ancient art that involves the application of approximately 150 essential oils belonging to eight aroma families. Most oils are mixed with either a carrier oil or are diluted in some way prior to use. While essential oils are generally considered safe and easy to use, for maximum benefit some basic knowledge is helpful.

Aromatherapy treatments may be offered at an alternative medical facility in your neighborhood. Some traditional medical establishments now offer alternative treatments, as well. It may be possible to take a course in aromatherapy basics. At the very least, online research or a quality book on the topic can help ensure you enjoy the full range of benefits aromatherapy has to offer from the start.
